Ingredients

  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 1/2 cup cocoa powder plus extra for dusting
  • 2 eggs
  • 3/4 cup butter softened
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp baking powder

Instructions

Step 1: Cream The Butter And Sugar

  • – In a mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter and white sugar until light and fluffy.
  • – This can be done using an electric mixer or by hand with a sturdy spatula.

Step 2: Add the eggs and vanilla extract

  • – Once the butter and sugar are well combined, add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition.
  • – Stir in the vanilla extract for a delightful aroma.

Step 3: Combine the dry ingredients

  • – In a separate bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt.
  • – This step ensures that the dry ingredients are evenly distributed throughout the dough.

Step 4: Gradually incorporate the dry ingredients

  • – Slowly add the dry ingredient mixture to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined.
  • – Be careful not to overmix, as this can result in tough cookies.

Step 5: Chill the dough

  • – Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and place it in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour.
  • – Chilling the dough allows the flavors to meld together and firms it up for easy shaping.

Step 6: Shape the football cookies

  • – Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • – Remove the dough from the refrigerator and divide it into small portions.
  • – Roll each portion into a ball and then shape it into a football using your hands.
  • – Place the formed football cookies onto the prepared baking sheet, leaving some space between them.

Step 7: Bake and dust with cocoa powder

  • – Bake the cookies in the preheated oven for 10-12 minutes, or until the edges are slightly firm.
  • – Remove from the oven and let them cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
  • – Dust the tops of the cookies with cocoa powder to mimic the appearance of a football.

Notes

– Make sure the butter is at room temperature before creaming it with the sugar. Soft butter will incorporate better with the sugar, resulting in a smoother dough.
– For a more pronounced chocolate flavor, use a high-quality cocoa powder. Dutch-processed cocoa powder will give the cookies a deeper and richer taste.
– If you prefer a thicker cookie, chill the dough for a longer period, up to 24 hours.
– Experiment with different shapes for various occasions. Replace the football-shape with other cookie cutters to suit your theme.
– These chocolate football cookies can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week.
