Equipment

  • oven
  • baking sheet

Ingredients

  • 4 cups self-rising flour
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • Salt as per taste

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 450°F (232°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or lightly grease it with butter.
  • In a large mixing bowl, add the flour and cut in the butter using a pastry cutter or your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  • In a separate small mixing bowl, mix together the buttermilk and baking soda until well combined.
  • Pour the buttermilk mixture into the flour mixture and stir until just combined. Do not overmix.
  • Turn out the dough onto a floured surface and gently knead it 2-3 times. Roll out the dough to about 1-inch thickness.
  • Using a biscuit cutter or a drinking glass, cut out biscuits and place them on the prepared baking sheet.
  • Bake for 12-15 minutes, or until the biscuits are golden brown on top.
  • Serve warm with your choice of toppings.

Notes

  • Make sure to use cold butter as this will help create the flaky texture in the biscuits.
  • Overmixing can result in tough and dense biscuits. Mix the dough until it just comes together.
  • A biscuit cutter or drinking glass helps create the perfect shape for the biscuits.
  • These biscuits are best served fresh and warm. You can reheat them in the oven or toaster if needed.
  • If you don’t have access to an oven, you can also make the biscuits in a skillet over medium heat. Cook for 2 minutes per side.
  • To make the biscuits extra fluffy, you can brush the tops with melted butter before baking.
  • If you want to jazz up the flavor, you can add herbs, cheese, and other ingredients to the biscuit dough.
  • You can also top the biscuits with gravy or other sauces for a delicious savory dish.
