Equipment

  • Food process or blender

Ingredients

  • 1.31 ounces or about 40 datil peppers depending on the size datil peppers chopped
  • 0.38 teaspoon paprika
  • 1.13 ounces tomato paste
  • 0.09 cup water or more to thin
  • 0.38 tablespoon honey
  • 0.38 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 0.75 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
  • Salt to taste
  • 0.38 tablespoon lemon juice

Instructions

  • Start by preparing your datil peppers. Wash them well and remove the stems. If you prefer a milder sauce, you can also remove the seeds.
  • Chop up the datil peppers into smaller pieces for easier blending.
  • Place the chopped datil peppers into a food processor or blender.
  • Add in the tomato paste, paprika, apple cider vinegar, honey, garlic powder, lemon juice, and salt to the food processor or blender.
  • Blend all of the ingredients together until you achieve a smooth consistency. If the sauce is too thick, add in a little bit of water at a time to thin it out.
  • Taste the sauce and adjust the seasoning to your liking. You can add more salt, honey, or even datil peppers for extra heat.
  • Once you are satisfied with the taste and consistency of the sauce, transfer it into a jar or container with an airtight lid.
  • Refrigerate the sauce for at least 30 minutes before serving to allow the flavors to meld together.
  • Serve your homemade datil pepper sauce with your favorite dishes and enjoy!

Notes

  • For a milder sauce, remove the seeds from the datil peppers or reduce the amount of peppers used.
  • You can adjust the amount of honey and vinegar to get the desired level of sweetness and tartness.
  • If you don’t have a blender or food processor, you can also use a mortar and pestle to blend the ingredients.
  • If you want a thinner sauce, you can add a bit of water or more olive oil to thin it out.
  • If you want to turn this into a spicy marinade, you can add a bit more olive oil and some lime juice.
  • To make this sauce even more flavorful, you can add some fresh herbs like cilantro or parsley.
